VIRGINIA CITY — Through its first two doubleheaders in 1A North play, the Wells baseball team had little to no trouble.
On March 29, the Leopards cruised to an 18-4 run-rule victory over Mineral County in five innings.
Wells capped the twin bill with an 8-3 victory in the finale.
On April 5, Wells also mercy-ruled Virginia City by a final score of 13-3 through five.
In the second half of the doubleheader, the Leopards smacked the Muckers by a tally 20-3 in five frames.
Versus Mineral County
Game One
Senior Miguel Martinez hit 3-for-4 with a double and scored two runs.
Senior Cesar Berumen batted 2-for-3 with two RBI, and junior Luis Garcia went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Junior Gage Uhlig (two RBI and two runs) and junior CD Hunt (one run) each finished 1-for-3, one of Uhlig’s knocks going for a double.
Junior Tristen Zimmerman closed at 1-for-4 with two RBI and crossed twice.
Without hits, freshman Raleigh Groves and junior Teagan Calton scored three runs apiece, freshman Dentin Allen came around twice, and freshman Landon Hall and sophomore Charley Peterson crossed once each.
In the start, Garcia allowed four runs — two earned — on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk across 3-2/3 innings.
Calton picked up the save and punched out one batter and walked another across a scoreless, hitless 1-1/3.
Game Two
In the finale, Berumen hit a clean 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
Uhlig (two runs) and Garcia each batted 2-for-4.
Peterson went 1-for-2, drove in two runs and scored once.
Zimmerman (two runs) and junior Adam Eggleston (RBI) both batted 1-for-4.
Without knocks, Hall scored two runs and Martinez drove in one.
On the hill, Calton tossed three scoreless, hitless innings and fanned three without a free pass.
In relief, Berumen got the save and gave up three-unearned runs on three hits with 10 Ks and only two walks over four frames.
Versus Virginia City
Game One
At the dish, Uhlig was 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI.
Berumen and Peterson were both perfect at 2-for-2; Peterson closing with three RBI and two runs — Berumen finishing with an RBI and a run scored.
Calton went 1-for-1, scored two times and drove in one.
Martinez hit 1-for-2 with a double and three RBI, and Hunt batted 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Without hits, Allen crossed three times, Hall scored twice, and Garcia came around once — freshman Michael Aguilar driving in two runs.
In the start, Garcia allowed two unearned runs on one hit with three Ks and three free passes through two innings.
From the pen, Calton gave up one run on two hits with seven punchouts and two walks across three frames.
Game Two
In the second half of the twin bill, Berumen was a beast at the plate and hit 3-for-4 with a triple, five RBI and one run.
Uhlig finished a perfect 2-for-2, drove in three runs and crossed three times.
Zimmerman was 2-for-3, scored three runs and drove in one.
Sophomore Christian Salazar went 1-for-1 with an RBI.
Calton and Garcia each closed at 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI apiece.
Without knocks, Aguilar scored three runs and drove in two, Hall crossed once and drove in one and Peterson tallied an RBI.
Martinez came in twice, and sophomore Aaiden Rogers, Groves and Hunt scored one run each.
In the start, Peterson allowed an unearned run and struck out three batters and walked one across two innings.
In relief, Berumen also gave up an unearned run and fanned six batters while walking three in two frames.
Allen saved and allowed one run on three hits with a strikeout in one inning of work.
