HAWTHORNE — The Wells baseball team’s lone losses in league play came during the final week of the regular season.

On May 2, the Leopards fell by close margins in both games of a doubleheader at Smith Valley by scores of 5-2 and 7-5.

However, Wells defeated the Bulldogs in two of three matchups during the 1A North regional tournament and claimed the 1A North championship on May 10, in Hawthorne.

Versus Mineral County

On May 9, the No. 2 Leopards gave up two runs in the top of the first inning to No. 2 Mineral County but exploded for 13 runs in the home half of the first inning and ran away with a 15-5 victory in the fifth.

At the plate, junior Luis Garcia hit 3-for-4 and drove in three runs.

Sophomore Charley Peterson went 1-for-1 with three RBI and scored once, and junior Tristen Zimmerman was 1-for-1 and crossed three times.

Junior Teagan Calton batted 1-for-2 with a double and two runs, and senior Cesar Berumen finished 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored.

Without hits, junior Gage Uhlig scored three runs, junior CD Hunt drove in two and came around once, freshman Landon Hall crossed twice, senior Miguel Martinez tallied an RBI and a run and freshman Raleigh Groves scored a run.

In the start, Garcia allowed five runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and five walks over 4-2/3 innings.

From the pen, Calton shut things down with a clean 1/3 of a frame.

Versus Smith Valley — Game One

In its first game against Smith Valley, Wells dominated the action in a 16-4 blowout on May 9 — closing the contest on an 8-0 burst with five runs in the top of the sixth and three in the seventh.

Garcia stayed hot at the dish and went 4-for-5, scored three runs and drove in one.

Zimmerman finished 3-for-6 with a triple, three RBI and a run.

Calton closed 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and crossed twice — Berumen batting 2-for-5 and scoring a run.

Freshman Michael Aguilar was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Uhlig hit 1-for-3, crossed three times and drove in a run — Hunt going 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Without knocks, Martinez tallied two runs and an RBI, Groves scored twice, and Peterson drove in one.

In the start, Peterson gave up four runs — just one earned — on four hits with five Ks and two free passes across 4-2/3.

In relief, Berumen slammed the door and allowed just one hit and punched out six batters with no walks through 2-1/3 scoreless innings.

Versus Smith Valley — Game Two

On May 10, the Leopards were unable to put away the Bulldogs in the first regional championship game and fell by a score of 12-10.

Calton hit 2-for-3, drove in two runs and scored one.

Uhlig batted 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Peterson went 2-for-4 and crossed once.

Zimmerman finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, and Garcia closed at 2-for-5 with an RBU.

Berumen was 1-for-3 with a double and a run, and Hunt hit 1-for-4 and came around once.

Without hits, Martinez drove in two and scored one and Hall crossed two times.

In the start, Calton allowed seven runs — only two earned — on five hits with three strikeouts and three free passes over 3-2/3.

From the pen, Allen gave up four runs — just one earned — on four hits with one K across 2-1/3.

Zimmerman allowed one run on two hits with a punchout in one inning.

Versus Smith Valley — Game Three

For all the marbles, Wells was able to overcome six errors in a lower-scoring battle by a final tally of 7-4 for the 1A North regional title on May 10.

The Leopards plated all seven of their runs in the top of the fifth after trailing 3-0 — giving up one run in each of the first, second and third innings — and allowed just one run down in the stretch in the home half of the sixth.

Peterson batted 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run, Hunt hit 1-for-3 and crossed once and Berumen also finished 1-for-3.

Uhlig, Calton and Martinez each closed 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Without hits, Zimmerman and Garcia drove in one apiece — Hall and Groves each scoring once.

In the start, Peterson allowed two unearned runs on four hits through two innings.

Berumen got the win in relief and gave up two unearned runs on just one hit with eight Ks and four walks over five innings.

State Tournament

North No. 1 Wells (27-6 overall, 15-3 versus league opponents) will face South No. 2 Liberty Baptist Academy (19-6 overall, 10-2 versus league opponents) in the first round of the Division 1A Nevada State Baseball Championships at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, in Indian Springs.
