September STARS

Felipa Marin, Herman Cabeje, and Ashley Pickett were selected as the September Staff and Teachers Achieving Results with Students (STARS) award recipients.

Marin, a custodian at Elko High School (EHS), was nominated by teacher Jeanine Hoskins, and student Justice Passmore.

“Felipa is a very dedicated and hard worker. She strives to ensure that our building remains clean and in the best condition. I have personally seen her go the extra mile for our students. The students love her and she always talks with them. She shows them that she cares,” said Hoskins.

“She goes above and beyond to make EHS students and teachers alike feel comfortable in their own school,” said Passmore.

Cabeje, a special education teacher at West Wendover High School, was nominated by a parent who wishes to remain anonymous.

The nomination read: “Cabeje’s teaching methods are innovative and tailored to meet the unique needs of each student, possessing a remarkable ability to adapt lesson plans, ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to succeed. His classroom is an oasis of acceptance, where students are encouraged to embrace their strengths, and their weaknesses are viewed as opportunities for growth.”

Pickett is a third-grade long-term substitute at Spring Creek Elementary (SCE). She was nominated by a parent who wishes to remain anonymous.

The nomination explained Picket is a well-known, valued staff member and parent on the SCE campus.

“She is always happy and positive. She makes every child feel special. She is always willing to help out her school and staff in any way she can,” read the nomination.

Recognition of these deserving employees would not be possible without sponsors: LeeAnne's Floral Designs, Maverick Gaming, and Rotary Club of Elko Desert Sunrise.

Beginning this school year, the employee recognition program will begin recognizing three employees on a monthly basis through May next year. The individuals selected do not need to be a classroom teacher and could be any employee who provides services at any Elko County School District school or department.
